Unleashing the Power of Play: Burlington's Youth Camps Ignite Passion and Fitness

Embracing the YMCA Adventure Camp: A Playground for Active Minds and Bodies

At the Greater Burlington YMCA Adventure Camp, the air is filled with the laughter and energy of dozens of children, each eager to make the most of their summer days. Remy Silvestera, a 9-year-old camper, has found the perfect outlet to stay active and engaged. "Every day, I'm like, I never get any exercise. Everybody's at camps, so I'm just like, I need a camp that gets me exercise," Silvestera shares, her eyes sparkling with excitement. The camp's diverse activities, from swimming and walking to playing ball, provide a well-rounded approach to physical fitness and recreation. Flo Goetsch, a 13-year-old camper in her fourth summer at the camp, can't get enough of the experience. "And I'm not just saying that; this is an amazing camp and I'm sad that I won't be able to come next year," she says, her voice brimming with enthusiasm. The YMCA Adventure Camp not only nurtures physical well-being but also fosters a sense of community and personal growth. As Goetsch looks ahead to her future, she envisions trying an overnight camp next summer, but plans to return to the YMCA when she's older, eager to continue her journey of self-discovery and exploration.

Cultivating Creativity at Burlington City Arts: A Haven for Young Artists

Across town, at Burlington City Arts, a different kind of summer adventure is unfolding. Here, young minds are introduced to a vast array of creative pursuits, from pottery and needlework to 75 different programs that cater to diverse artistic interests.Emi Bedrosian, a former camper who has now transitioned into a teaching assistant role, reflects on the significance of these programs. "I mean, summer, for me, I've always thought of it as this wide open space for students to really, honestly, sometimes not have anything to do. So, these programs give kids something productive to do during this three-month period of nothingness, you know?"The camps at Burlington City Arts go beyond mere entertainment, as they often expand on the skills and knowledge that students acquire during the school year. "I think kids engaging in summer camps is super beneficial, specifically art camps. I know a bunch of school districts may not have the best art programs, so I'm really happy that at BCA we're able to supplement," says Quinn Johnson, a ceramics instructor. For Gus Williams, a 9-year-old longtime city arts camper, the summer camps provide a refreshing change of pace from the rigors of the academic year. "A lot of times I can just sit back and relax because in school you have to worry about tests, quizzes, projects– all that stuff. But you don't really have to do stuff in the summer," he explains, his face lighting up with a sense of freedom and joy.
